Achva Bakerem,a group of residents from Beit HaKerem and the surrounding area, established a magical community garden in the heart of Beit HaKerem, which is an open and inviting “synagogue” – a lively alternative gathering space that fosters community life and the creation of contemporary and relevant Jewish culture.
Achva Bakerem has broken new ground in urban sustainability and works to merge Judaism’s ancient wisdom with liberal and humanist values.

A wide variety of activities take place there :

❀ Kabbalat Shabbat, holidays, cultural activities, plays, music…

❀ Beit midrash studies

❀ Agriculture and gardening, urban nature and a wood recycling workshop

❀ Educational work with school and kindergarten students

❀ Working with a group of people with disabilities

❀ Organizing trips in Jerusalem and the surrounding area

❀ Body-mind activity; Tai Chi, Chi Kung, Yoga.

All activities aim to create a living space that offers an alternative living space to the consumer culture- the western and the widespread concept according to which each individual lives for himself.

We work to create a space that encourages and fosters community ties, guaranteeing  mutual responsibility for the human and natural environment. These actions, alongside the human encounter and being in nature in the heart of the city, in the heart of the neighborhood create personal and community resilience, which is so necessary, certainly these days.

Achva BaKerem offers a Jewish community and a cultural framework for liberal Jews.
We strive for connections between spiritual and material aspects of the world.

Rabbi Nir serves as the congregational rabbi for Congregation Achva Bakerem, as well as teaching Jewish and Islamic thought in a high school for religious and secular Israelis. Rabbi Nir is an ordained Reform Rabbi, has an MA in Jewish Education and a B Arch in Architecture and Urban Planning.
